Easily the most under-rated fixture in the kitchen is the garbage disposal, also called a food waste disposer, disposes of unwanted foodstuffs without having to toss it into the trash, awaiting collection day. Decaying food attracts insects, dogs and other pests and can even contribute to serious illness. So, it is important to keep your disposal running smoothly, and if you don’t have one, have one installed.
Blue Plumbing & Drain Cleaning service vans stock the Insinkerator Badger 1, 1/3 hp. disposal. This is the most common size found in homes. Other sizes and models are available through local parts houses.
Tip: Always run water full blast while using your disposal and introduce foodstuffs a little at a time to avoid back ups. And never put peels, bones or any thing that cannot be ground properly. Peels often get beneath blades and cause overflow.

The person in this picture is trying very hard to jam up their disposal. Putting too many things in your disposal all at once, especially fibrous foods, is a BIG no no. Even though it's called a "garbage disposal," it really isn't. The rule of thumb is, if you can throw it away, do throw it away. Disposals are really made for getting rid of what's left of the food on your plate or things like soups, or other things that are hard to throw away. Following these procedures, disposals will rarely get jammed. If yours gets jammed, it is best to call a professional to unjam the unit. In conclusion: Always put small amounts of food at a time with the water running on full, and run your disposal at least once a day with the water running.
Most people don't realize that the less you use your garbage disposal, the more likely you will have bad smells coming from inside the disposal. The first recommendation is to use the disposal consistently while running water. To eliminate foul odors, we recommend making what we call a "soap shake." This is done by putting a few pumps of dish soap on the floor of the sink, then with the faucet running on full pressure, wash the soap away while running the disposal. Keep up this process for several minutes. This will wash away any spoiling foodstuffs from the blades of the disposal.
Some people also put about a tray full of ice into the disposal before starting the above procedure. Ice cannot clog your disposal as it turns to water while the disposal is running.
